The Art of LAM

Meet Laurie Masters Artiste Extraordinaire!

I have had the honor and privilege of knowing Laurie ( dubbed Princess Laurie by my sons ) for more than 25 years.  Like many friendships we meet in high school.  There was a group of us ( most of us are still friends!) that ate lunch together in the hallway outside of the library.  We were known around school as the kids in the library hall.

Laurie is singularly one of the most talented people that I know!   The way that she transforms a canvas is like nothing I have ever seen before.  Her attention to detail is out of this world.  It is my pleasure to feature her here today.

A selection of Oil Paintings:

..."Laurie has always been fascinated by what can be portrayed in facial expressions, particularly, what the eyes portray. Laurie started out painting in acrylics, but after discovering the beauty and diversity of oil, she decided to concentrate her painting to oil on canvas. Laurie excels in painting in vibrant color, but also enjoys painting black and white portraits. Laurie also incorporates texture into her paintings through palette knives or the use of textured paper to achieve the desired effect. Her paintings are contemporary portraits, all done on a fairly large scale and are intended to give the viewer a “feeling”, whether that be to elicit sympathy, tears, or a smile...."

A selection of Prismacolored Pencil Portraits:

..."most of Laurie’s paintings have been seen by others through photographs, she sent her actual painting of Ellen Degeneres to Ellen’s television studio in Los Angeles. The painting subsequently appeared on “Ellen”, hanging on the wall on one of her talk show episodes featuring actress Jennifer Aniston, being prominently displayed in the middle of a group of viewer art. It appeared on Ellen’s show a second time in an episode when Ellen took viewer art to display at the MET in New York City, where it was hung for a time..."

Staying Organized while Busy!

Your finally done!  Everything is organized and in its place.  It probably took a long time and you want to keep it that way.  Its really easy to fall back into old habits.  Life just happens, we get busy.  Here are a few simple tips to help keep your space organized.

1.  Make your bed

Seems really simple doesn't it.  Its one small step to keep you on the right path in the morning.  Making your bed sets the tone for the rest of your day.  It helps determine whether or not you end up leaving your clothes on the floor or putting them in the laundry basket.  Make the bed ( with white sheets!)

2.  Put it Away

I know that I have said this before, but I can not stress it enough.  This is the easiest way to stay organized and really it doesn't take long.  Everything has a place.

3.  Make a to- do list everyday

Sounds kinds of basic and that is because it is.  Making a list of what you want to accomplish for the day helps keep you focused and will give you a feeling of accomplishment for achieving what you set out to do.  You can even give yourself stickers for when you check something off  LOL

4.  Devote 15 Minutes Everyday to Tidying Up

Really 15 minutes isn't that much time if you consider how much time it took to get everything organized.  In this 15 minutes consider the following:  Has the dishwasher been emptied, is the laundry put away ?  I promise it will be 15 minutes well spent.

Don't stress the small stuff, keep everything is perspective and it will all fall into place.
Best of luck,

Laura xx

The Business with Closets

Hangers!  Yes Hangers!  Firstly I think they should all match.  Why? Well that is how my brain works, plus it looks nice.  The ones that I use are wood like pictured to the right.  No particular reason those are just the ones that I like.  Other than that don't get to hung up on hangers...see what I did there ;) I find that a lot of people get hung up ( and again!) on trying to find hangers for every piece of clothing they have.  I don't understand this really when you have dressers and folding to take care of  most items.  Really the only things that should be hung up are, Jackets, Dresses/Dress Pants, and Bulky Sweaters.   Everything else gets folded.   Yes you read that correctly!  Your closet isn't to small you are just using it wrong....you probably have clothes in it you either don't like, don't need and doesn't fit!  Eliminate most of that and I promise you, your closet is big enough.

As always organizing is about making your life easier.  Your closet is no different.  The items that you need and use the most should be the most accessible to you.  If you are like me, you probably wear 3 or 4 things more than anything else.  Why hunt for them if they are your favorites?  Create a spot for them, if its in your closet or in your drawer.  Remember, all of this is about making your life easier.

Best of luck

Vulnerability

Straight from the Heart

For the first time in let's say 25 years I am renting my home.  After years of being a home owner I never dreamed that I would find myself having to pay rent and start again.  What happened.....? That is a question that I get asked a lot and one that I have only just had the courage to ask myself.  The short answer:  I screwed up!  We screwed up!  We put our trust in the wrong people and it left us in a tight position.   Why am I writing about it now....?  It's time. It's time to face everything and get myself back.  For far to long I avoided looking at myself in the mirror.  I didn't want to see the heavy bags and the deep purple bruising from yet another sleepless night from stress and worry.  I also needed to show 2 very important people that when life knocks you down you have to get up and keep punching.
I don't want my sons to grow up and only remember the times when their Mother was  sad.  I want them to remember ME.

Rebuilding is not easy.  Its hard! It takes everything you have and then some. But you know what? It is so worth it.  Life is a wonderful gift. Enjoy it!

White Sheets

Why I LOVE White Sheets!

Call me Crazy ( believe me many do! )  I love white linen.  Not just sheets, but  towels too.  I feel very strongly that everyone should have white linens and here is why:

Beside having a luxurious hotel feeling every night that you go to bed ( who doesn't want that? ) its practical.  Bare with me here, because I am sure that you are already thinking ya sure, white would require way more work.  When you do the washing, you can throw all of your linens, including towels together without worry about any colours running.  And, when worst comes to worst and you have stains beyond recognition for this  man created bleach!   Besides all of this White literally goes with everything saving you time and money.  If you want versatility, as most of us busy moms do,  all you have to do is add a throw blanket or pillows to change up the decor.  I am telling you its a win!

So  go ahead have the coffee in bed on your white sheets, its ok ;)

Organizing Tips

My Short List of Organizing Tips

1.  Keep it Simple!

Do you find that everyone in your house misses the laundry basket, or that there is always a smattering of clothes on top or around the laundry basket but not actually in the laundry basket?  Its the same at my house.  My suggestion for this is very simple.  Take the lid off!  Place it in a spot that you can throw your clothes into it from across the room.  Give it a try, the result might surprise you!

2.  Purge, Purge, Purge

Most often I find that when asked to help someone organize the first thing they want to do is shop for storage containers.  This is the last thing you need.  The reason you have a problem with organization is because you have to much STUFF!  You have to let some of it go!

3  Put it Away!

Why wait?  Put it away now instead of later.  The longer you wait the more bothersome the task.  This is also a good habit to get the kids and husband on board with!  This is a hard one, because its not just about organizing but about changing habits as well.  Give it a try, I am sure that you will be happy with the results.

4. Put a Label on It!

Organizing is about creating systems that cater to your everyday needs.  I find that it helps to use visuals.  Label everything.  This way there is no confusion on where something goes or no panic when you are looking for something.  I LOVE my label maker!

I hope that you find some of these helpful.  I know that many people find organizing overwhelming even stressful.  My goal is to show that it doesn't have to be, in some cases it can even be fun!
